We are currently in the midst of weaning our little boy from night feeds; he is also teething and learning new things every day. So sleeping through the night is not something he is prone to as his ever increasing brain is doing overtime. The sleepless nights have taken me back to those first few days of having a newborn and being a parent for the first time.
Elwood wouldn’t sleep on anything that wasn’t human, so my wife and I would take shifts to hold him while he slept; when we weren’t sleeping (or attempting to), we were having conversations that made little sense and propping ourselves up on a diet of coffee and donuts. It was tiring and at the same time we were trying to treasure the precious days of having a sweet smelling, soft skinned newborn baby, but it is so hard as your only priority in those first few weeks is keeping your baby, healthy and fed!
After a few days, we had visitors and asked them to take a few pictures of our newborn baby and us; the results were interesting… We couldn’t get the right lighting, we had family who were not so canny at focusing the camera, we were overtired and unwashed – we look back at those photos and laugh at the dreadfulness of them, but they also are a fond reminder of those incredible hazy and exhausting days.
In retrospect, it was a pressure we shouldn’t have put on ourselves, we should have arranged for someone to come and take pictures for us, preferably someone who had slept for more than 2 hours…
Now I am working as a newborn and family photographer, I completely understand why sometimes it’s ok to ask for help and take some of the pressure off in those valuable first few weeks. I feel the key to capturing beautiful newborn images is to ensure the shoot is very relaxed, therefore I come to your home and let the baby dictate the pace, they can be fed, comforted, changed and of course cuddled in their own cosy environment. Plus, if the parents want to be part of the photographs too, we take the time to ensure everyone is relaxed and you get to preview the pictures there and then to ensure you are happy with a snapshot of precious memories to adorn your walls forever.
