I get to meet and chat to lots of parents through my work but also through being a mum myself. When I mention I am a newborn, child and family photographer I often hear ‘oh I can never get mine to sit still long enough to take a photo’. I assure them…and I can assure you 1) you are not alone and 2) I have a few tricks to capture some beautiful smiles.
In advance, it is important to let the children know that a photographer is coming. You can talk to them about why you want the photos, perhaps get them to choose where they would like them to hang and let them get excited about that too. They can practice their cheeky smiles and some fun poses.
Perhaps they can have a say in what they wear – their favourite tutu or t-shirt. They might want their favourite bear or super-hero to be in the photo, I can work with that. Or, if they like dressing up, I have a box of tricks I can bring too.
For the shoot itself, I aim to keep it as short as possible. I take photos in bursts and let them have a play so they don’t become too restless. Lolly-pops, stickers and a lucky dip work with my son, so I often have some in my bag and the ‘best helpers’, ‘most smiley’ ‘best poser’ can get their reward.
With young children shoots I often spend most of the time jumping up and down, pulling silly faces and make funny sounds to get the giggles going which captures some great natural smiles.
So don’t worry I am a professional! We can work together, in the comfort of your own home, to capture some beautiful images of your children just as they are today, we know that, as soon as tomorrow, they will change.
